This Monday, November 12, 2012, I will have the chance to share several ideas about sacred space in the modern church with music leaders from churches around Kentucky .
In 2009 I was serving as Pastor of Worship and Arts at Memorial Baptist Church in Frankfort, Kentucky. That's when we started worshiping in a brand new, radically different, slightly larger Worship Center.
It is quite contemporary, and very sacred.
Here was our motivation: for people who are coming to church for the first time, or the first time in a long time, it will feel more like their office building than a church building. That was very intentional. We wanted it to feel "normal."
But it will also be undeniably Christian. That was every bit as intentional. We wanted it to feel "sacred."
Integration of faith and life.
So many things were done with intentionality--architecture, windows, colors, seating, unique decorative features, stations around the room, sound system planning, theatrical and ambient lighting, projection system, storage, platform size and shape... and access, the baptistry, and even storage areas.
I left that church about 18 months after we moved into that retrofitted building. And I've been gone nearly three years now.
But I still really love how we created such an undeniably modern, unquestionably sacred environment for worship.
That's the preview. If you're a Kentucky Baptist worship leader--part time or full time, join us on Monday for much more. (Email me for info.) For now, here are a couple of pictures.
If you'd like to learn more about how to think through creating such a space in your ministry context, I'd love to help. Shoot me a message and we'll talk about how I may be able to do that.
